Dundee business — New store on Highway 99W features retro furniture and decor

DUNDEE — Kerry McDaniel Boenisch has done a lot of different things in her life, from working in the motion picture industry to authoring a book on the local wine industry. But furniture is her first love. Formerly the proprietor of Viva Furniture, the Dundee native has launched a new store, Kerry’s Deluxe Furniture, Home and Garden, located behind Tres Beau Salon in the 900 block of Highway 99W in Dundee. “Once my husband and I had kids, I had to move on,” she said of Viva, which closed in 2000. “Now that the youngest is in school, I can go back into business.” Her new store features a range of vintage furniture — not antiques in the traditional sense, but pieces from the Art Deco and Modern design schools of the 1930s through the 1960s, as well as Asian antiques and local crafts. “It’s the color and form that drive me — color especially,” she said of her interest in retro decor. “This isn’t a thrift shop or a secondhand store, but pieces in good condition, with a classic look and an element of fun.” Boenisch’s love of design began as a young woman when she worked as a sales rep for a textile manufacturer in New York City. “I would visit the Museum of Modern Art and I got the chance to meet designers who bought our company’s fabric for their upholstery,” she said. “It really opened my eyes up to a whole different world.” Boenisch also put her bargain-hunting and decorating skills to use as a wardrobe and set designer for movies and commercials, before entering the retail world. “It’s always changing, always something new,” she said of owning a showroom. “It’s a challenge to offer something for everyone.” Kerry’s Deluxe will hold a grand opening and sale during Thanksgiving weekend, with regular hours from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays thereafter.
